lovely, but just curious - would they really allow her those smokes? being that she's in just as much an insane asylum as a prison, I really don't think she'd get the luxury.

I'm thinking that perhaps I should just cut my loses and delete the picture. I feel that it's already caused too much drama.

Cigarettes in prisons are actually a lot like currency between the inmates, so they are common.
But they do earn minimum wage with the bits of work they do (like license plates or picking up garbage), but usually save it for use in the commissary.

Yes, I do know that is how that works - in a regular prison. Asylums (especially one with traffic like they see at Arkham, I would assume) have different rules because the patients (in mates) can't be trusted to play by the same rules.

Arkham is not some sort of all-around maximum security facility. It does have its high security areas where they hold and contain all sorts of super criminals (The Joker, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, etc...), however it is an asylum and rehabilitation facility. They house all sorts of people from the criminally insane to the slightly troubled, looking for a bit of help. Just because you're in Arkham, doesn't mean you're going to be on hard lockdown. Especially first night.

In a situation like the one Alice is currently in, where she has been currently arrested for criminal actions, She would honestly wind up in a facility such as Black Gate. Granted, Black Gate is an actual prison facility as opposed to Arkham being an asylum and rehabilitation facility. Therefore, it would be possible to obtain things such as cigarettes and other contraband.

That does make sense.

Although, I wasn't stating that I was right - merely questioning if this would really be all that accurate; I'm a very logic-driven person, and I tend to muse upon such things for the sake of substantiality and realism. To question is not a crime, although some people evidently think that it is. Questioning means character building and development.

I don't believe anywhere in the deviation Jes said that she'd been arrested for "criminal actions", nor was it stated wither she was in the high security division of the facility, or the general rehabilitation ward. I'd discerned, however, given her attire (prison clothes) and the good guess that she'll end up with Bane (assuming he didn't die in DKR - haven't seen it yet, no spoilers please) as well as the fact that she has her own super villain name, I gathered that she just MIGHT have been put in high security at Arkham, and considering THAT, I had to wonder if staff would REALLY want to allow their most criminal and violent patients to have something as dangerous as a lighter/matches/cigarettes. Something that could be used to hurt themselves, their care-takers/shrinks, their security guards, or that could be used as a diversion to engineer their own escape. Give the Joker a pencil and he can kill a man with it. I doubt if they'd want to take those kind of risks when and where it can be avoided, in all seriousness. Especially since I didn't assume that Alice was your casual/garden variety crazy, but Batman Villainess type of crazy. Again, given the handle.

Also, from my understanding Arkham really does change a lot from platform to platform - comics to movies to the animated series to video games, each version of Arkham is rendered a little differently, and in some it is MORE of a prison than in others. So, actually, depending on the interpretation of Arkham itself, it can be a bit more of an "all-around maximum security facility". Kinda where the worst crazies in a universe full of LITERAL SUPER VILLAINS go.

It's fine that she's having a smoke, especially since Deed changed it to 'Prison' and then 'Black Gate'. I'm not arguing that her character can't smoke. I was just questioning if it was REALLY realistic that her character be this smoking badass in Arkham.

Actually I'm not pairing Alice with Bane officially. There will be this sexual tension, but other than that, no sex, no loving, no caressing. Alice will not have a significant other.

I'm sorry, if I knew the smoking was going to cause a problem I wouldn't have added it to the picture. :( please don't allow this to escalate into something it shouldn't (This goes for both of you) I just wanted to draw her in a prison cell enjoying the victory/defeat of her first time shaking up Gotham. I suppose I should have went right with Black Gate instead of Arkham but I'm still new to the DC fandom there for I will make mistakes from time to time. I'm glad you mentioned something so that I could fix it though. But please don't put my characters through too much scrutiny, I tend to get very weary when people point out everything I do wrong. ^^;

I do greatly appreciate your input on my work, because I do look up to you as an amazing artist and you never steer me wrong with character development.

That's always nice to hear. I like to see femme fatals who can stand on their own. Especially in the DC/Batman fandom. A bit of sexual tension can be fun, but I kind of like the idea that they're not going to be fully paired. I simply made the assumption because it tends to happen rather frequently. Not that it's a bad thing. Sometimes I really like the OCxCannon pairings, if they're done properly. But a good character can stand on their own two feet without a love interest, and sometimes it's fun if they don't really have one.

Really if I had known that it was going to be such a big deal I wouldn't have opened my mouth and said anything about it. I wasn't attempting to instigate a fight or insist that you were 'wrong' somehow. I was merely questioning if it was all that believable that the staff at Arkham would allow their crazies a lighter or matches. Because in most insane asylums/wards, they don't. They don't even allow their patients to wear clothes with buttons on them because the patients might swallow them in a suicide attempt. Prison makes sense, Arkham not so much, which, if it was the first night before she got shipped over to Arkham: yeah, sure! All the more power to you! I just don't think that she'd be smoking there - and that might play into some nice character development. Having her go through with-drawls and all that.

Really I am not trying to pick apart your character. And hell, even people who've been a part of a fandom for a LONG TIME make mistakes. It happens to everybody, so don't get down on yourself. Cause really; it's not even that big a deal. I don't make it my business to go around pointing out every little flaw and correcting people's characters; character development is a very personal and intimate thing, that happens as you grow as a person and in the fandom. Your adjustments are your own to make; rather, I tend to question things that I find off, just like with this. It's the other person's choice to either adjust it (like you did) or to carry on and ignore it. I'll give suggestions, and I'll raise questions, but I do my best not to scrutinize and put an OC through the ringer unless they really, really, REALLY deserve it - which, your characters do not.

I have no intention of fighting with ~PaleHorseApocalypse, but I wont be made to look like a fool either. :/
I know what I am talking about with mental wards; My dad used to work for one. Just like my grandfather used to work for the state penitentiary, and my mother works for the hospital. I know some stuff about all three types of facilities, and that's why I bring them up. Yes I know how cigarettes are used like currency in prison, but I also know that patients in mental wards aren't allowed long sleeves because they'll make nooses out of them. Stuff like that. I'm not an idiot, and I will not be treated like one. Especially since I was in no way attacking you, merely voicing a question.

If your husband would like to have words then we can move it to a private discussion in a note, but considering I wasn't trying to tell you that there was something 'wrong' with your OC or that this is the way that it needs to be, and merely bringing to the table my own understanding of the way that things work (both in real life and in the Batman universe), there really shouldn't be any need. I have no intention of letting things escalate, and if they do, then for the sake of our friendship and my respect for you I will tip my hat and say "good day sir."
